This post shows why it's even more important for a journalist to double-check before hitting something out into the twitter world. News organisations should be trusted sources on Twitter, and I imagine will lose followers if they keep churning out un-checked content in relation to breaking news. If they keep doing that, people will unfollow or not re-tweet because they won't trust the source. No one wants to re-tweet something that is wrong.

Good post though and you raise an important issue. As a journalist, if I see something tweeted I will try to verify it by official source e.g. Police, Council etc. I tend to trust tweets that link to something a lot more than just the 140 characters of more often than not opinion or speculation. Plus, through building a community you learn who are your trusted followers and contacts.

[...] Twitter breaks news, but will it break journalism? | memeburn Public relations practitioners are already talking about ‘breaking’ news of an event (staged for commercial benefit) via Twitter. According to the earlier-mentioned info graphic, they would position themselves to serve as ‘witnesses,’ in order for their ‘news’ to be happily retweeted by the rest of us, and effectively bypassing any editorial scrutiny.
I don’t think information contained in 140 characters is necessarily insignificant. I’m not suggesting it’s not journalism either. I’m saying for it to be trustworthy some old school journalistic standards might need to be applied.

Tough choice 140 characters of "new" news vs. some people being turned off by the appearance of it being insignificant. Thanks, Ed Smith http://www.conductknockoutbroadcastinterviews.c...
