Google buys Quickoffice, looks to integrate into app suite

Looks like the acquisitions team at Google has been given free reign over the company cheque book. Just one day after the internet giant bought out social and sharing outfit Meebo, it announced the acquisition of Quickoffice.

In an official press blog post, Google said that it was “happy to announce” that we had acquired the “leader in office productivity solutions”.

It also made it pretty clear what its intentions for the company were:

Today, consumers, businesses and schools use Google Apps to get stuff done from anywhere, with anyone and on any device. Quickoffice has an established track record of enabling seamless interoperability with popular file formats, and we’ll be working on bringing their powerful technology to our Apps product suite.

Quickoffice has a strong base of users, and we look forward to supporting them while we work on an even more seamless, intuitive and integrated experience.

Quickoffice claims that it delivers “high quality, innovative mobile office software and solutions and is revolutionizing the way people use their mobile devices”. Its flagship software allows people to view, edit and create Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents on their mobile devices.

The fact that the company builds apps for iPhone, Android, and Symbian means that Google has its hands on a product that operates on the vast majority of smartphones.
