The Oatmeal’s not the only one crowdfunding Tesla’s legacy

We recently told your about The Oatmeal’s efforts at raising money for a museum dedicated to Nikola Tesla. Well it turns out it isn’t the only one using crowdfunding to honour the legacy of the nineteenth century scientist, inventor, and original geek.

Memeburn’s got wind of Kickstarter project aimed at bringing Tesla’s story to life in the form of a documentary.

The man behind the project is documentary television producer and founder of the now defunct Electric Motors Wil Cashen. He has used the Serbian inventor’s story to inspire his own life’s work (he created a retrofitted electric pickup truck for Ford).

Cashen says he wanted to produce docu-drama, “Electricity: The Story and Life of Nikola Tesla” because he couldn’t stand the thought of his hero remaining in obscurity.

He reckons that the film couldn’t come at a better time. After all projects such as The Oatmeal’s fundraising efforts, the rumored biopic starring Nicolas Cage and Christian Bale (who also starred in Christopher Nolan’s Tesla-influenced “The Prestige”), or even the car company using Tesla’s name and invention to power the future of driving, show that “Tesla’s visionary work and bittersweet biography are as astonishing and relevant as ever”.

The team behind the project claims that “only “Electricity” allows fans of this unsung genius to take an active role in correcting the wrongs done to this man’s life and legacy, while also bringing awareness of his monumental contributions to the public at large”.

The project has support from the likes of magician Marco Tempest, who allowed his TED talk regarding Tesla to be featured on the Kickstarter campaign page for “Electricity.”

Anyone contributing to the project will reportedly receive themed shirts, Tesla figurines, solar iPhone case-chargers, and a chance to be part of the “Electricity” cast.
