Vine introduces 17+ age-rating as it cracks down on adult content

Vine

Twitter’s recently released video-sharing app Vine now comes with a 17+ age restriction. It’s a bit like the internet in microcosm really. You build an amazing tool that can be used for news-gathering [1] and all sorts of other cool things and people use it for porn [2].

The new setting forces you to confirm that you’re older than 17 to install the app, and comes as part of an update which also included minor bug fixes and the ability to share to Facebook and Twitter after a video has been posted.

Prior to the update, Vine was available to users older than 12, with the app’s developers censoring porn-related content following last week’s controversy. As The Verge [3] notes, the new measure is probably meant to assuage further fears about inappropriate content on the service.

As with most online age restrictions though, getting past the warning doesn’t really require anything more than the ability to press the “OK” button. Unless you’ve got a parental-controlled phone therefore, you shouldn’t have any trouble installing the app.

According to The Next Web [4], Vine also now gives you the option to block users or report a profile, something that comes in addition to the ability to report videos for inappropriate content.
