DSTV Box Office

Paid digital satellite TV service DStv is teaming up with internet service provider MWEB to give its subscribers 6GB of ADSL data as well as one free movie download.

The movies will come from the satellite TV provider’s Box Office offering, which gives people access to major Hollywood films fresh off the circuit directly to their PC or Mac for a set monthly fee. Movies are available for streaming or to download.

The partnership between the two makes a fair amount of sense. They are both, after all, owned by emerging markets internet and media giant Naspers. It also signals a willingness from a major emerging markets media player to embrace a paid downloads model. That makes a refreshing change from actively trying to persecute people who download while at the same time slowing down the delivery of content.

The promotion between the companies only applies to DStv’s premium subscribers and then only to those who are now MWEB customers for six months from date of sign-up.
