Is Handre Pollard’s right boot really worth R2-million?

The South African public may be calling the general worth of the Springboks into question after Saturday’s humiliating loss to Japan, but that hasn’t stopped Bidvest Insurance from covering flyhalf Handre Pollard’s right boot for R2-million.

According to a press release sent to Memeburn, the group was inspired by the precedent set by other high-profile public figures. Mariah Carey for instance insured her legs, David Beckham his whole body, Fernando Alonso his thumbs and Ugly Betty’s America Ferrera has gone as far as to seek insurance cover for her signature smile.

“Handre is a key member of the national team and we want to ensure that we’re getting behind our boys over the next eight weeks and literally putting our money where our mouth is, in insurance,” said Phil Donnelly, Sales & Marketing Director at Bidvest Insurance.

In the spirit of insuring Pollard’s right foot and to encourage rugby fans to get behind South Africa in supporting the national team, Bidvest Insurance has also launched a competition on its Twitter and Facebook pages where members of the public submit their most unusual and unique items that they think should be insured.

By tweeting @BidvestInsures with the hashtag #WhatWouldYouInsure, or sharing the ideas on the brand’s Facebook page, members of the public stand the chance to win a signed jersey from Pollard as well as two season tickets to their favourite South African rugby stadium for the 2016 season.

This isn’t the first time Bidvest Insurance has been involved with members of the Springbok rugby team.

“We’ve enjoyed a great relationship with a number of players over the years and we’re currently a sponsor of Jean De Villiers’ tribute series,” said Donelly. “We also sponsor both Handre Pollard and Pat Lambie’s motor and household insurances, so we really are intent on giving our best penalty kickers total peace of mind that they’re covered back home allowing them to focus on that all important kick for their country”.
