Microsoft releases Visual Studio Code 1.0 code editor

Tech giant Microsoft has released version 1.0 of its browser-based code editor Visual Studio Code (VS Code). This comes after its initial Public Preview in May last year, and the Beta Open Source in November.

The announcement was posted on the Visual Studio website. Since its initial launch last year, over two million developers have installed the software. The VS Code community has also created over 1000 community extensions, such as support for PHP and C++.

The company has worked with its community in order to improve the product with bug fixes and stability improvements. It now also supports nine different languages, which include French, German, Japanese, and Chinese.

Microsoft says the purpose of VS Code was to build a browser-based code editor that felt native to users for both text and source code editing, which they’ve succeeded in doing. It was initially built for developers creating apps with JavaScript and TypeScript.

VS Code is already incorporated into Microsoft’s own OneDrive, Visual Studio Team Services, Bing Code Search, and Azure products, and it’s used to debug their own VS Code systems.

One instance was the appearance of Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President of Office 365 Client Apps and Services Team, Kirk Koenigsbauer taking to the stage at an Apple event to demonstrate Office running on the iPad Pro with the Apple Pencil.

The company also announced that Visual Studio 2015 would contain cross-platform development for Android and iOS.

VS Code is under 40MB in size and can be downloaded from the Visual Studio website.
