South African President Jacob Zuma has officially resigned.

The head of state for nine years announced his intentions to step down as leader of the country at a press conference in Pretoria late Wednesday evening. Quite the Valentine’s Day present, too.

This also comes after the ANC announced its intention to recall the President.

“I have come to the decision to resign as president with immediate effect,” he told the nation.

At the time of writing #ZumaResigns is trending worldwide on Twitter. And everyone seems really, really happy.

Others not so much…

And some just wanted to get a few jokes in before midnight.

ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa will now become South Africa’s acting president, and will likely be sworn in as the new president tomorrow.
