Shh, don’t tag Malusi Gigaba while he’s playing Candy Crush

When journalists spied a certain finance minister Malusi Gigaba playing iPad games during Ramaphosa’s big moment yesterday, you just knew social media would light it up.

As unkind as it usually is, Twitter was first to poke and prod. But others were more interested in what level Gigaba was tackling.

Over on @AdvBarryRoux — a Barry Roux parody account now known for pulling no punches on the network — users asked this question, subsequently tagging @mgigaba.

“Did anyone tag @mgigaba to ask what level was he playing here?” wrote @Teboho_8008.

But if you’ve ever been stuck in a trying mobile game, about to catch that legendary Pokemon, or one swipe away from 2048, you’ll know how distracting notifications can be.

But Twitter just went along and carelessly disrupted Malusi Gigaba’s adventure anyway.

And again…

And some more.

This goes on for another six replies.

Those seated in Parliament’s gallery did note that Gigaba stowed his tablet as soon as Ramaphosa took to the podium, but we’re not sure if it was in part due to Twitter ruining his progress.

But we still have so many questions.

What level was he on? What games will he play during the Budget Speech next Wednesday? Was his iPad fully charged?

We may have a new president, but we’re no closer to answering these important questions.
