Netflix has today announced that South Africa will get its first locally-produced and directed Netflix Original in the form of Queen Sono.

Starring Pearl Thusi — who has appeared on Netflix before in the movie Catching Feelings — will star as a “kickass female spy”.

“Can’t wait for you guys to see what we have in store for you,” she added in a tweet.

According to an iOL report, Kagiso Lediga — another member of the Catching Feelings team — will direct the flick.

It’s a promising development, considering Maria Ferreras the company’s VP for business development in EMEA told Memeburn in December 2017 that there was nothing “specific to announce yet”.

“What we’re looking for is local talent with global appeal,” she added.

It seems that Pearl Thusi and Kagiso Lediga are exactly what the company’s been searching for.

Queen Sono will debut on Netflix in 2019.
