Capcom listens and is giving fans a Resident Evil 2 remake

One of the greatest horror games of all time is getting a remake. Yes, Resident Evil 2 from Capcom will be receiving a makeover and revamp for a new generation of gamers.

Fans have been begging for a Resident Evil 2 remake for years. So far Resident Evil 1 received one for the Nintendo GameCube and also a remaster for current and last generation systems. The Resident Evil remake not only updated the visuals, but tweaked gameplay, added in new enemies, and retconned some of the story to fit in with later entries. It was well received by critics and gamers alike.

Resident Evil 0 — originally published on the GameCube — is in the process of being remastered. Much like Resident Evil 1‘s remake, the game just needs some bumped up visuals to run on newer gaming systems. It’s expected to launch in early 2016.

The game did receive a pseudo remake in Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles, but it was a light-gun game and a Readers Digest version of the story.

It seems Capcom may be taking a queue from Square Enix’s announcement of the Final Fantasy VII remake, which was announced during Sony’s press conference at E3 this year. Both titles have seen many a petition and begging from ravenous fans for new versions, but Square Enix had to make the first move. Capcom’s decision is interesting and one that could be mimicked by other game studios in the near future. Even though Konami may be falling by the wayside into a pool of septic smartphone games, who wouldn’t want a Silent Hill remake?

While the Resident Evil 2 remake doesn’t have a release date, expect around a two year development time, going on current development standards. The game should also launch on PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and dare we say the Nintendo NX? The company hasn’t announced if any new features, characters or monsters will appear.

Now if only Capcom could get a handle on the MegaMan series.
