Galaxy S8 to have 1000fps video, iris scanner – report

The Samsung Galaxy S8 rumour mill has been churning out a constant stream of stories, but the latest claim might just be one of the biggest.

According to SamMobile and Korean outlet Naver, the new Samsung flagship will have a similar high fps video recording function as the newly announced Sony Xperia XZ Premium. It’s claimed that the Galaxy S8 will have a 1000fps option, as opposed to Sony’s 960fps feature.

It’s believed that Samsung has achieved this in a similar manner to Sony, by attaching fast DRAM to the camera sensor. However, it’s claimed that Samsung isn’t using Sony’s camera sensor.

What we really want to know though, is just how many seconds of 1000fps video the S8 can record if this report is true… The XZ Premium technically only allows one second of slow-motion at 960fps, owing to the frames quickly filling up the DRAM. Sony’s trick is to allow users to record normal video and then tap an on-screen button to capture slow-mo at the exact moment.

Another interesting nugget of information is that Samsung will apparently have an upgraded iris scanner, after the technology appeared in the ill-fated Galaxy Note 7. It’s claimed that, aside from an 8MP selfie shooter, the front will feature a 3.7MP camera for iris scanning.

What else should we expect from the Galaxy S8 then? Tipsters and/or official sources point towards a high screen/body ratio, IP68 water-resistance, a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, the Exynos 8895 chip or Snapdragon 835 processor and HDR capabilities.

All will be known on 29 March, when the smartphone is officially revealed.
