Nokia phone receives update before Google’s own Pixels

Back when HMD announced its initial range of Nokia-branded smartphones earlier this year, it touted pure Android and fast updates as two main selling points.

In fact, earlier this year, former HMD CEO Arto Nummela told Gearburn in an interview that the range would all be getting Android updates in no time flat.

Now, the latest security update for Android has been pushed out — and Google’s devices weren’t the first to get them.

According to Nokia Power User, citing reader tips, the September security update has been pushed to the Nokia 5 before the Pixel and Nexus phones. The publication adds that it’s not the first time that this has happened, as the Nokia 6 apparently received the July security update ahead of Google devices too.

Nevertheless, GSMArena notes that the head start was short-lived, as Google has since released the update to its Pixel and Nexus devices.

It’s encouraging for HMD, given its pledge to quickly deliver updates. But the real question will be just how quickly the Finnish firm can push out Android feature updates (ala Oreo, Android P etc).

Either way, here’s hoping that the Nokia 3, 5, 6 and 8 all receive Android Oreo in short order.
