Nokia 10 rumour: will it have five cameras on its back? [Update]

HMD Global’s first wave of Nokia-branded smartphones have certainly been successful, but if there’s one area of improvement, it would have to be the photography department.

The Nokia 8 (review) offered a good but not class-leading camera experience, while the camera app itself also left us wanting. Now, a Baidu post (via Nokia Latest) claims that there’s a Nokia 10 in the works, and it’ll apparently offer a penta-lens camera solution. That’s five.

Does this mean five lenses on one camera sensor, akin to a rotary dial setup (that’s the first image that came to mind)? Five lenses for five camera sensors? It’s unclear at this point, but we’d lean towards the latter as being most likely.

In the case of the latter, each lens/sensor combo could potentially be devoted to specific tasks, such as telephoto shots, a super wide-angle camera, traditional camera, monochrome shooter and so forth. But what’s perhaps more likely is that HMD would combine the ton of image data to deliver an array of interesting effects.

Otherwise, the report also claims the device will pack a Snapdragon 845 chip and will most likely miss Mobile World Congress next month.

All in all, it’s certainly one of the wildest leaks if true, but what does HMD say about it? “We don’t comment on any market rumours,” a representative told Gearburn.

Update: It seems like subsequent reports point to the phone having dual cameras and five lenses, rather than five cameras.
