Renault targets emerging markets with Kwid concept [gallery]

When a car maker produces a concept, it tends to have a specific kind of person in mind. Now though, Renault’s produced something called the “Kwid” which it reckons could be perfectly tailored to people in emerging market countries. More especially though, it’s going after young people in those markets.

Unveiled at the Delhi Auto Show, the buggy-style concept looks like the kind of car that can’t help but elicit an opinion. Some might call it funky while others might criticise the French marque for pandering to the kind of imagined “yoof” market that listens to dubstep and walks around with their skinny jeans falling off their bums.

The interior meanwhile is apparently designed to serve as a snug cocoon and is inspired by a bird’s nest. According to Renault, the vehicle’s seats, suspended over a solid base in white, give an impression of lightness, while their two-tone elastomer material provides a sense of brightness.

The Kwid, which was designed in partnership with Renault Design India, also features some serious tech. Alongside the usual gizmos though, there’s something that you’ve most likely never seen on a car before: a “flying companion”.

Taking off from the rotating rear portion of the KWID CONCEPT’s roof, the Flying Companion can apparently be operated in one of two modes — the automatic mode using a pre-programmed flying sequence and GPS location as well as the manual mode, which enables the companion to be controlled using a tablet inside the vehicle. Renault says the Flying Companion can be used for a variety of purposes, including scouting traffic, taking landscape pictures and detecting obstacles on the road ahead.
