  • Snapchat’s interface becomes human-friendly with universal search bar

There are a few reasons why Snapchat is an absolute painful experience for many. For one, the app's actual user interaction elements like buttons and gestures are vague and confusing. And it doesn't end there. It's also extremely difficult to find content within the app itself. But this could be about to change. According to a TechCrunch report, Snapchat has unveiled a new universal search bar, that spans the top of each and every page on the app. This means that users -- even if they aren't too sure where they are within the app -- can search for friends, specific Stories...

  • Did Snapchat inflate its user numbers for IPO?

A former Snapchat employee has claimed that the company lied about its user growth figures in a bid to boost its valuation. Anthony Pompliano filed a lawsuit (h/t: Yahoo) against Snapchat parent company Snap for wrongful termination, having lasted just three weeks at the company. Pompliano's legal representatives claim that the company was "falsely representing" user growth statistics to investors and trading partners, going so far as to call it an "institutional pandemic". The ex-employee says that he informed several key figures, including Drew Boller (Snapchat's vice-president of finance), Jill Hazelbaker (vice-president of communications) and Brian Theisen (director of business operations). "These efforts, which should...

  • Adult Swim, more coming to Snapchat thanks to Turner deal

Snapchat took one big step to becoming the next social media TV platform, with a penned deal between its owner Snap Inc, and media giant Turner. The global media corporation and the social internet company will now work together to bring "new brands to Snapchat's Discover platform, extending live coverage of Turner's premium sports events, and working with several Turner brands to develop Snapchat shows", Turner announced on its press site. The deal between Snap and Turner will cover content, content distribution and advertising, and will give Turner access to Snapchat's front page, or its Discover tab. Snapchat and Turner will produce...

  • Instagram gets live videos, disappearing photos

Facebook-owned Instagram continues its quest to take on Snapchat with two new features this week. The first new feature is live video for Instagram Stories, which is pretty self-explanatory. "Live video on Instagram Stories helps you connect with your friends and followers right now. When you’re done, your live story disappears from the app so you can feel more comfortable sharing anything, anytime," Instagram says on its blog. The two features are a big addition to Instagram, although they're definitely inspired by Snapchat "It's easy to go live — just swipe right from feed to open the camera, tap the 'Start Live Video'...

  • WTF are Snapchat Spectacles?

If you haven't a clue what Snapchat Spectacles are, don't worry. We had a similar debate in the office whether to publish this piece on Gearburn or Memeburn. But luckily, the social outweighed the gadgetry. We also imagine that this is exactly what Snapchat (or its parent company, now known as Snap) wanted too. Debuting on 10 November 2016 (just in time for people to get over the US Elections), Snapchat Spectacles is the company's jovial answer to smart wearables like Google Glass and Microsoft HoloLens. But it's much simpler than those devices. In fact, these US$130 sunglasses do two things...

  • WhatsApp Status: Facebook’s latest Snapchat killer?

According to a report by BGR India, Facebook-owned WhatsApp is revamping its Status page with a splash of inspiration from Snapchat. Dubbed "Status" for now, the new WhatsApp feature will allow users to send and set images as statuses. Users can also doodle over them, and limit the viewable audience. Okay, so it's not entirely like Snapchat's rolling photo-reel then, but it does have shades of the app within it. WhatsApp Status allows users to set images as statuses, similar to Snapchat and Instagram Stories BGR India notes that the new feature is buried in WhatsApp beta version 2.16.336 but can only be...

  • Here’s why Snapchat is Snapchat’s own worst enemy

It's tough to think of another mobile platform that's enjoyed as much success in as short a time as Snapchat. The service has managed to successfully shed its early reputation as sexting platform number one. In the process, it's transformed into a service that prides itself on being a platform for authentic media-sharing. Who needs carefully shot, crystal clear DSLR snaps when spur-of-the-moment, blurry shots can feel more intimate? Who cares about smooth, 4K video clips when shaky footage happening right now feels more authentic? Or at least that's the thinking... As a result of the app's live nature, it's quickly become a social media icon alongside...

  • Kansas City Diaries: can brands beat Snapchat at its own game?

Kansas City Diaries is an exclusive article series by Natalie Pool as she goes undercover at VML's global agency headquarters in Kansas City, USA, to find out how organic search, Snapchat and other technologies are changing the advertising and marketing industry. Snapchat is not what you’d call a brand-friendly platform. In fact, it actively discourages brands from creating organic content and makes it purposefully difficult for users to find you (unless you’re Kylie Jenner, arguably the biggest brand on Snapchat right now). And without reporting metrics for organic content, it’s tricky (but not impossible) for agencies to prove its value...

  • Snapchat mulls IPO, with huge valuation – report

Snap, the parent company of Snapchat, is reportedly considering plans to issue an IPO. According to the Wall Street Journal, citing "people familiar with the matter", the IPO could value the company at US$25-billion "or more". The publication added that the offering could occur as early as late March 2017. Snapchat joins Twitter in the financial fray It's not the only social player engaging in serious financial talks either, as Twitter is expected to field acquisition bids this week. According to the publication, Salesforce is emerging as one of the more prominent potential buyers. Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff is seeking Twitter's treasure chest of data and its brand,...

  • Rocking The Daisies: Memeburn’s essential app kit

We know the feeling: you're so amped for Rocking The Daisies that you forget to pack the most important things, like sunscreen, underwear or that preppy new denim shirt you bought. But while you probably also forgot to pack essential gadgets, what about those important apps? Believe it or not (perhaps you're a purist), but surviving the modern music festival -- like Rocking The Daisies -- takes more than sheer adrenaline and sunburn. You may just need an app or two to keep up to speed with the festival itself. So, with that in mind, here is Memeburn's essential app kit for...

  • Instagram, LinkedIn strong performers in SA – survey

Instagram and LinkedIn are showing strong growth in South Africa, despite claims of "social media fatigue" by some, a new survey has revealed. The Social Media Landscape 2017 Survey has revealed some interesting preliminary insights ahead of its full reveal later this month, starting with Instagram. The Facebook-owned platform "Instagram has experienced a massive increase in SA users, although not quite in the triple digits like the year before," said Ornico research consultant Michal Wronski. The survey suggested that the network was growing up as well. "The top 25 most followed people are similar to the year before, indicating a maturing of the network as audiences have consolidated." LinkedIn taking the...

  • Apple reportedly working on a Snapchat clone

We've already seen Instagram copy Snapchat by implementing Instagram Stories (a take on Snapchat Stories), while Line's developer released a Snapchat-like platform of its own. The next company to get on the ephemeral photo/video bandwagon? Well, it could be Apple... According to Bloomberg, citing people familiar with the matter, the Cupertino company is working on a video sharing and editing application for its iOS devices. Bloomberg adds that the new app will let users record video clips and add drawings and filters to them -- sound familiar? From here, they can either be sent to contacts or to your timeline on existing social media platforms. Apple's Snapchat clone will...

  • 5 incredible social stats to celebrate World Photo Day

World Photo Day is a fun holiday celebrated on 19 August each year. First established in 2010, the day celebrates each and every one of us who've ever clicked a shutter button, and the results thereafter. And you know, most of what we produce are pretty important to those enormous, multi-billion dollar internet companies. Some rely almost squarely on uploaded images in their daily running and prosperity, and the numbers behind those snaps (rather than the snaps itself), are probably worth a thousand words themselves. For a peek at just how important a role images play on the internet, have a...

  • Premier League 2016: follow all 20 clubs on social media right here

With the Premier League season kicking off today, there are a fair few things to note beforehand. With the League's new branding scheme focusing more on the football than ever before, we'll likely see an even bigger push from clubs, promoting themselves on social media. Premier League clubs are social media marketing powerhouses (as well as being fairly good at kicking plastic air-filled bladders around too) with a combined 40-million Twitter followers; and that's not even mentioning reach through hashtags and other platforms. But while watching football sure is fun, we live in the age of social media. Have a look at...

  • We take a quick look at Instagram Stories (video)

It is no secret that Instagram Stories looks a lot like Snapchat's Stories but what could the new feature do for Instagram? Having reached the 500-million user mark, with 300-million people using the platform daily in June, Instagram already has a user base that can make Instagram Stories a success. "With Instagram Stories, you don't have to worry about overposting. Instead, you can share as much as you want throughout the day — with as much creativity as you want. You can bring your story to life in new ways with text and drawing tools. The photos and videos will disappear...
