Weekly Round Up Podcast #107: Cape Town’s water crisis & JUMO

Welcome to Weekly Round Up, our podcast discussing the latest tech trends, innovation and news from the last few days.

This week, Andy Walker hosts Julia Breakey and Stephen Timm as Hadlee Simons parties it up at a work event.

The team’s main focus today is on the Cape Town water crisis, as we discuss ways we personally are doing our bit, how Derek Van Dam has put us in the international spotlight, and how one startup wants to solve the crisis with fog.

Over on Gearburn, we talk about waterproof cellphones, and how much Julia thoroughly despised the Hisense C-30 Rock (whose full review should be up shortly.)

Cape Town’s water crisis was featured on the likes of CNN thanks to meteorologist Derek Van Dam

Finally, Stephen tells us about South African fintech startup JUMO, which has become the first South African startup to be selected by Google for its Launchpad accelerator.

What are we watching, reading, playing: Julia has been consuming media non-stop for the past month, and has many a recommendation.

First is British TV drama Victoria, about Queen Victoria and her cousin and husband Albert. Up next is the second season of Netflix’s Sense8which she swears is the best sci-fi drama on TV right now. Then there’s Harlots, the women-driven Hulu series about 18th century sex workers. And to top off the feminist list is the book Bad Feminist by Roxane Gay, which offers a soft and witty insight into the life of an African American woman in the world today.

Finally, she is listening to Crooked Media’s Pod Save America and Lovett or Leave It, both of which offer updates on US politics in humorous and digestible portions.

Stephen, in contrast, has been playing around on Instagram, finding interest in Moby’s hostility towards US president Donald Trump.

Finally, Andy has been playing GT Sports, and is definitely still playing Plants vs Zombies in the background. He also found an illustrator on YouTube called Domics, who uses simple animation to tell interesting stories. He’s also excited to listen to Cracked’s interview with The Simpsons writer Dana Gould, as well as Song Exploder’s new episodes.
