Firefox Send: Mozilla debuts experimental file sharing service

firefox send

The Firefox name is lending itself to yet another product that isn’t a web browser.

After WhatsApp in July debuted its buffed file sharing service supporting up to 100MB files, the Mozilla-built browser has now one-upped the Facebook-owned chat giant.

Located in its Test Pilot service — in which Mozilla allows the community to test a number of pre-release experiments and features — Firefox Send allows internet users to kite files of up to 1GB to anyone anywhere in the world.

Additionally, said file and link will disappear within 24 hours, or be destroyed after it has been downloaded once. Oh, and it’s also encrypted and completely free.

Firefox Send is Mozilla’s bid to be more than just a browser maker

At present, the service works with Mozilla Firefox 54 and Google Chrome, but doesn’t yet play nice with Apple Safari or Microsoft Edge.

Support for the latter is however in the works.

Mozilla’s other goodies

If file sending doesn’t quite do it for you, Mozilla’s Test Pilot platform also adds two other experiments to the Firefox browser this month.

This includes a built-in browser notepad and a feature dubbed “Voice Fill” which gives the browser the power of speech recognition.

You can take a gander at these experiments more closely here, or give Firefox Send a try by visiting this link.
