Facebook Messenger has had a pretty interesting 2017, despite some embarrassing mistakes like that Stories clone “Day” no one used.

According to the company, there were 17 billion real-time video chats on the platform between January and November this year. Messenger boasts 1.3 billion active users a month — meaning the average user was only making around 13 calls a year.

Facebook Messenger boasted 17 billion video chat sessions in 2017 — an average of only 13 per user

More popular than video chats were GIFs, which were sent 18 billion times in 2017. But most popular? The 500 billion emojis sent in just one year. That’s 1.7 billion a day.

Incredibly, there were over 7 billion conversations on the platform every day in 2017. That means there was a conversation for nearly every person on the planet on any given day this year. That’s pretty wild.

Other fun facts in the company’s roundup include that the average group chat involves 10 people, the most popular reaction in a group chat is the “haha” emoji, and the most popular in one-on-one conversations is heart eyes.

It all begs the question: how much does Facebook know about us?

Of course, this all begs the question: how much does Facebook know about us? It may not have access to our exact messages, but it can tell when we’re happy, sad, chatting with our loved ones, or in need of face-to-face communication.

And we already know that Facebook has the ability manipulate our emotions. So that’s really comforting. Happy 2017, everyone.
