On Wednesday, social network Twitter shed some light on some of its 2018 metrics, including South Africa’s most popular hashtags, and the country’s most popular tweets.

While one would think that the most retweeted tweet would focus on politics, the country’s SOE crises, or anything to do with sport, it’s not the case.

These are the most retweeted tweets of the year in South Africa according to Twitter.

Published in July, this repost of a clip filmed by Africa News tells the story of a 11-year-old Nigerian artist who has a particular talent for producing life-like portraits.

At the time of writing, it received more than 300 000 retweets across the social network, with 430 000 likes.

South African recording artist Bonginkosi Dlamini, better known as Zola7, became the subject of this particular tweet which paid homage to the “living legend.”

The tweet, posted in April, gained traction largely because Zola7’s still alive and well and those commenting just couldn’t help but drive that fact home.

At the time of writing, it has over 21 000 retweets, with 25 000 likes.

When asking the Twitter community to retweet anything, they usually oblige. Inno Matijane just wanted to be on MTV Base.

Posted in May, the tweet has since racked up over 18 000 retweets.

South African recording artist DJ Maphorisa needed 10 000 retweets from this Twitter user before he worked with another artist and fan, T-Ban.

At the time of writing, the tweet has over 28 000.

Finally, the content of this tweet doesn’t really originate from South Africa. Instead, it’s a  clip from Britain’s Got Talent.
