South Africa rejoice: no load shedding scheduled for Sunday, says Eskom

Good news, rugby fans. Eskom will not be load shedding in South Africa on Sunday, the power utility announced late on Saturday.

The country has been battling a new bout of electricity woes since Wednesday, when Eskom abruptly announced that load shedding would commence.

This, Eskom noted, was caused by a number of issues — including boiler pipe leaks and conveyor belt issues — at its various plants.

In its announcement on Saturday, it stated that “some units returned to service as planned” but came online later than expected. This meant Eskom ate into its diesel and water reserves today.

“Plans are progressing well to prepare the conveyor belt at Medupi,” it added.

Nevertheless, it does not believe that load shedding will be required on Sunday, but did note that plans could change at “short notice” if more plants were to experience issues.

Either way, it’s good news for those who want to watch the Springboks take on Japan at 12.15pm in the pivotal Rugby World Cup quarter-final clash.
