  • South African box office chart: Suicide Squad no longer top

For the first time in several weeks, DC Comics' Suicide Squad (review) has been knocked out of its first place position, being replaced by Mechanic Resurrection. Suicide Squad still has the current highest ticket sales, coming in at over R31.5-million in SA alone. What other movies were making waves at the South Africa box office in this weekend (2 to 4 September 2016)? Comedy Bad Moms has gained a position from fourth to third place. Star Trek: Beyond dropped from third to fourth, which isn't bad for a film that only had one 2D screening in SA on its opening weekend. Suicide Squad still has the current...

  • Morgan gets a creepy movie trailer made by IBM Watson

Arguably artificial intelligence has no place in creating art, which is a uniquely human experience. But it seems that both IBM and 20th Century Fox thoroughly disagrees. A new trailer for a film dubbed Morgan has been put together by the IBM Watson supercomputer, and it's riveting. Not giving away too much of the story while keeping viewers interested to see more, the Morgan trailer is one of the most uncomfortable trailers I've seen in ages. Morgan, starring Kate Mara and Anya Taylor-Joy, tells the story of a lab experiment gone wrong, and a corporate analyst's endeavour to solve the problem. Artificial...

  • Gene Wilder dies: praise swells on social media for ‘giant of comedy’

Gene Wilder, perhaps most famous to Millennials as the face of the Condescending Wonka meme, has died age 83. Wilder, who succumbed to complications surrounding his struggle with Alzheimer's, starred in a slew of movies from 1967 through to 1991, which his most famous roles include Frankenstein in the 70s, and Willy Wonka in 1971's Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory. His most recent appearance on screen was in season five of Will & Grace back in 2002. 'The suspense is terrible... I hope it'll last' - Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka Soon after news of Gene Wilder's passing broke last night South...

  • John Oliver wants to make superhero movies great again with Johnny Strong

From X-Men Apocalypse to Suicide Squad to "Sad Man vs Super Sad Man", 2016's comic book movies have left a lot to be desired. That's the cry of John Oliver and much of Memeburn's staffers at least, but what can be done to inject some life into the dreary DC and Marvel cinematic universes? Perhaps feeling a tad bored this week, John Oliver took to Last Week Tonight's YouTube channel to unveil his intricate new plan to save comic book movies from their current rot. Johnny Strong, also known as John Olivier, is an unconventional fifth-grade super hero clad in a...

  • HBO’s Westworld gets its first Hopkins-laden trailer

Although Game of Thrones and Last Week Tonight are two enormously popular TV shows, that isn't all HBO is known for. The American cable channel has been churning out some great watches recently, including Silicon Valley, and True Detective. But it's latest series, Westworld, might be its best yet. Starring the likes of Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris, Thandie Newton and Evan Rachel Wood, the series is based on a Michael Crichton novel of the same name. Most of the characters are inhabitants of a futuristic Western-themed amusement park, but they aren't exactly people living normal lives. As you can imagine, Anthony...

  • How bad is Mattel’s Max Steel trailers? Ask YouTube

After LEGO showed that even toy makers can make huge profits in cinema, another is now getting in on the business. After American company Mattel announced that it's working on a Max Steel flick back in 2009, we finally have a trailer of the finished product. And... we've some mixed reactions. Max Steel will look at the protagonist's origin story, from emotionally-downtrodden American boy, to a wall-punching, rage-screaming super kid thanks in part to aliens. Sounds pretty good right? Well, that's where it starts and ends really. The international trailer on YouTube was likened to a "fake fan trailer", while others are...

  • South African box office chart: Ice Age 5 faces mass extinction

Proving that reviews aren't the be all end all, Suicide Squad is still the top pick for South African movie audiences, but Ice Age clearly isn't. What movies trailed in its wake over the past weekend (19 to 21 August 2016)? There were a lot of drops this past weekend as new titles entered the fray. Jason Bourne, the movie that tries to show Matt Damon still has a career, only dropped a single space from fourth position. Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates had to move over in second position for Bad Moms, while Pete's Dragon clutched onto that third place...

  • Comcast makes $3.8bn DreamWorks Animation purchase official

Mass media conglomerate Comcast has officially announced the completion of its purchase of DreamWorks Animation studios. Costing a cool US$3.8-billion, the studio "will become part of the Universal Filmed Entertainment Group, which includes Universal Pictures, Fandango, and NBCUniversal Brand Development," Comcast explains in a presser. DreamWorks Animation was founded in 1994 by film director Steven Spielberg, current CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg and media mogul David Geffen, and is responsible for some 32 major feature films. Its first, Antz, debuted back in 1998, and set the tone for movies like its latest production, Kung Fu Panda 3. DreamWorks Animation, founded in 1994, will likely...

  • South Africa’s weekend box office: Finding Dory loses her way [2016/08/17]

Even with low review scores and the fans decrying reviewers, Suicide Squad is still holding first place in the South African movie charts. What other movies have SA audiences lapped up over the past weekend? (12 to 14 August) Coming in at number two is the terrible-looking comedy, Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, with Pete's Dragon entering at third position. Jason Bourne has slipped down two positions to number four, while the all-female version of...

  • South Africa’s weekend box office: Suicide Squad explodes into theatres [2016/08/08]

It looks like super hero-type movies will continue to attract audiences as Suicide Squad (our review) debuts in first place in SA. What else did SA love this past weekend (5 to 7 August)? Apart from DC Comics's latest film, two other films -- Jason Bourne and Ghostbusters -- are sitting in top SA box office positions. Then there's Ice Age 5: Collision Course and Legend of Tarzan, which are occupying the fourth and fifth spaces respectively. The movies that's grossed the highest on this list so far, Finding Dory, isn't even in the top five. In fact, the movie is struggling to keep...

  • South African movie goers still loving Finding Dory, BFG delights [2016/07/04]

It should be no surprise the Pixar has released another mega hit with Finding Dory and SA audiences are still flocking to see it. What else did SA love this past weekend (1 to 3 July)? Comedy action movie Central Intelligence is still holding its second place position from last week, while the BFG: The Big Friendly Giant has delighted its way into third place. The CGI-heavy Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 has debuted in fourth position, with the equally action-heavy sci-fi romp, Independence Day 2: Resurgence, exploding down two spots. It looks as though SA audiences have finally had their fill of WarCraft as...

  • Orange Is The New Black premiere sees lesbian porn search spike

Set in a women's prison, Orange Is The New Black is a wildly popular series. But did you know that the latest season, which dropped on Friday 17 June, also affected porn statistics? According to the ever-reliable Pornhub Insights blog, the new season resulted in a spike in lesbian- and prison-related search terms in the 48 hours after its release. Searches for 'lesbian' and 'prison' topped out at 59% on the Saturday, while searches for 'prison' or 'jail' peaked on Sunday (hitting 21%). Of all the searches containing 'lesbian' and 'prison', what were the most popular specific searches though? Related: Father’s Day sees a spike in ‘daddy’ searches,...

  • Finding Dory remains South Africa’s most popular movie this week [2016/06/28]

Over the past weekend (24 to 26 June), SA movie-goers were still amped about Finding Dory. The kid-friendly flick started off strong in the local box office last week and is still holding first place. Some other titles, however, are not doing as well. Blizzard Entertainment's big-screen video game adaptation, WarCraft (review), has slipped from the second to sixth spot, which is quite a tumble. The magician-centric Now You See Me: The Second act has also taken a two spot tumble. Both Alice Through the Looking Glass and X-Men: Apocalypse (review), are no longer sitting in any top ten positions. For movies of their...
