Golden Joystick award winners crowned

The superlative game of 2011 was awarded to Portal 2 at the Golden Joystick awards. The London Park Plaza was the venue for the glitzy event which saw hundreds of the year’s best games competing for the coveted prizes.

Portal 2, the mind-bending action-adventure from the creators of Half Life won “Ultimate Game”. Creating portals, navigating a dying production plant and combating the hateful AI called “GlaDOS” turned out to be an experience that every gamer could sink their teeth into.

While Portal 2 was crowned best game, there were no titles which managed to completely dominate the award show.

Other notable winners included Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, the globe-trotting follow-up to Assassin’s Creed 2. With a larger city, a troupe of assassins to control and well-received multiplayer, Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood managed to garner the nomination of “Best Action/Adventure Title”.

Despite the endless selection of smartphone games to choose from, the judges picked Angry Birds Rio in the “Best Mobile” category. Angry Birds Rio is an addition to the multi million-selling iPhone, Android and Nokia title.

Each genre found an overall winner based on what could be popularity over true gaming innovation. Best role-playing title went to Fallout: New Vegas, the quasi-sequel to Fallout 3. While gamers wait for Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (named “One to Watch” by the Golden Joystick judges), Fallout: New Vegas will continue to keep Xbox and Playstation owners lost in the wastelands.

The sporting award was dished out to FIFA 11, with FIFA 12 already looking as if it will scoop the 2012 nomination. The 3DS may have sold poorly, but that did not stop it from receiving the “Innovation” award. Here is the full list of winners:
