The recently announced Huawei Nova and Huawei Nova Plus smartphones will be coming to South Africa in early 2017, a company representative confirmed.

The smartphones, announced at IFA earlier this month, deliver metal designs and a couple of premium features (4K recording and fingerprint scanner) at a lower than flagship price.

“We are ranging the product for early next year. So more details about where they’ll be positioned, how they’ll be positioned will come around early next year,” said Hawa Hyath, Huawei’s marketing director for sub-Saharan Africa. Hyath added that it was too early for a price just yet.

The executive also answered a question surrounding the possibility of Huawei offering a monthly subscription plan for devices, akin to the iPhone.

“I think a large part of Huawei business is how we position the best opportunity for both data and voice with the operators, and I think our business interest is to continue offering best value together with the operators and the partners.”

Hyath was speaking at the Cape Town launch of the Huawei Customer Service Centre. The service centres will offer official accessories, free WiFi, devices to purchase (including the Matebook, oddly enough) and on-site repairs.

A Durban service centre?

Will the repair side of things affect the company’s relationship with WeFix in any way?

“I think that what the service centres are, essentially, is a brand house for people to experience Huawei service and that’s the primary role for the service centres. It also serves as a hub for the WeFix environment,” Hyath explained. “It’s the service centre environment, the customer experience for the brand and the hub for the other service centres.”

Currently, there are just two service centres in the country (one in Cape Town and one in Johannesburg), but there are plans to expand.

The company confirmed that they were doing a service centre in Durban, with plans to open it before the end of the year.
