YouTube and Guggenheim team up to showcase extraordinary video work

In 2008 the Guggenheim Museum teamed up with YouTube in an attempt to better connect with the public and “reach the widest possible audience”. The result was YouTube Play – a showcase of exceptional talent working in the ever-expanding realm of online video. Anyone could submit creative video for the contest and would stand a chance of having their work displayed in the hallowed halls of New York’s Guggenheim museum. The creative video biennial finally came to an end on the 21st of October 2010 after accepting 23 358 video submissions.  Originally it was decided that the submissions would be whittled down to 20, yet the quality of the work led the jury to eventually choose 25.

The top 25  videos were announced at a special event on the 21st of October at the Guggenheim Museum where they will be played in special kiosks as part of the biennial exhibit. The winning videos were created by 39 artists from 14 countries: Australia (1), Brazil (1), Canada (2), Chile (1), Czech Republic (1), Denmark (1), England (2), France (1), Japan (1), The Netherlands (1), Northern Ireland (1), South Africa (2), South Korea (1), USA (9). Videos were chosen from a number of genres including non-narrative, experimental works; mashups; animations; stop-motion graphics; remakes; music videos; and narrative short films.
