Springbok rugby legend becomes YouTube celebrity

Brendan Venter, the former Springbok rugby player and current coach of English club Saracens, has become an overnight YouTube sensation, following a bizarre, Oscar-worthy performance in a post-match interview with famous commentator Martin Gillingham.

Venter’s team had just been beaten 21-24 by Racing Metro when Venter lined up to do the traditional post-game interview. Just two weeks earlier, the coach had been fined R250 000 “by the European Rugby Cup officials for [comments] suggesting they had not prepared their referees sufficiently for interpreting the new breakdown laws”.

Venter was clearly incensed about the fine and decided to have his revenge in the best possible way. He fulfilled his interview obligations but gave an interview which said nothing and offered no opinion. Instead, he merely regurgitated the questions that were given to him, leaving the interviewer perplexed.

Take a look:

Saracens CEO Edward Griffiths was in on the plan as well, confessing that “the idea had come to Venter when the team were travelling on to Gloucester and had watched the movie Mike Bassett: England Manager on the bus“.

The 60”-clip has already been watched over 172 000 times on YouTube at the time of writing.
