Multi-million dollar SA company buys US cloud enterprise

South African IT giant, Dimension Data, has acquired Californian based-cloud enterprise OpSource. The path to the deal is reported to have been paved by the Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT) , of which Dimension Data is a subsidiary.

The acquisition is expected to help the US$4.7-billion ICT services and solutions provider accelerate its cloud offerings. OpSource will be absorbed into Dimension Data started own cloud service, Cloud Solutions Business Unit, which will report directly to the company’s CEO, Brett Dawson.

In a statement released to the press, Dawson explained the decision to acquire OpSource: “OpSource brings a rich set of services, a sound cloud architecture, and extensive experience in cloud services that will meet immediate client needs — in addition to a cloud infrastructure which supports development and growth in this space.

We believe OpSource provides us with an accelerated time-to-market as their infrastructure and services are well-established and tested. Dimension Data is now well-positioned to provide our clients with services that help them at each step in their journey toward cloud architectures.”

OpSource CEO and co-founder, Treb Ryan was similarly optimistic about the acquisition. “We believe that as part of Dimension Data, OpSource will be better able to capitalise on the global cloud computing market opportunity. We’re thrilled to be a part of the Dimension Data family,” he said.

OpSource has a staff of 150 and has its headquarters in Santa Clara, California. It has further operations in Virginia, the United Kingdom, Ireland and India. More than 600 enterprises, service providers and Software-as-a-Service Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) employ OpSource’s expertise, experience and cloud automation technology to operate high-availability, business-critical cloud computing and hosting environments.

Dimenion Data expressed hope that the acquisition would assist in its amibiton of “accelerating the transition to cloud computing for clients across all regions”. The group believe that its “competencies and capabilities in IT integration are a strategic differentiator and critical to helping organizations effectively adopt a cloud architecture”.

Details around the total value of the acquisition are yet to be released.
