The rise of Amazon has been pretty spectacular. From humble beginnings in 1994, when Jeff Bezos took bookselling online from a garage, Amazon has gone on to become the number one e-tailer on the planet, surviving the dotcom crash along the way.

Amazon now has data and support centres all over the planet, it is one of the forerunners in the cloud revolution, and its play into the hardware space has seen it go from popularising the eReader platform to taking on giants in the tech space with the Kindle Fire.

These are thing we all know about Amazon, but did you know that its annual revenue is larger than the GDPs of half the countries in the world, or that it serves 137-million customers a week and that preorders for the Kindle Fire indicate that it set to double the launch of the iPad?

According to Frugal Dad, the story of Amazon’s in the last 17 years can “only be compared to the thunderous rise of Walmart. And in some ways, the curve is steeper: the million-title-bookseller turned world’s-largest-retailer hit the $50 billion sales mark in half the time it took Walmart”.
