Facebook launches 60 new apps for Timeline

Facebook Timeline has added apps from some 60 new media partners. At a special event, the world’s largest social network announced apps for the signature feature from the likes of Foodspotting, Foodily, Ticketmaster, Pinterest, Rotten Tomatoes, Pose, Kobo, Gogobot, and TripAdvisor.

The new apps allow users to update their timelines with activities relevant to them. Pintrest or Pose users, for instance, can use the apps from those companies to post pictures of their favourite items onto their timeline.

In an official blog post, Facebook also gives of examples of how people can use the food or travel apps:

If you love to cook, you can add the Foodily app to your timeline and share your latest dishes. If your friends have added the Foodily app, you can discover new recipes with each other, as you’ll see their updates in the ticker and their timeline, and possibly News Feed.

If you’re a traveler, you can add the Gogobot and TripAdvisor apps to bring a virtual passport to your timeline, and show your friends where you’ve been and share tips about your favourite spots from around the world.

The social network claims there will soon “be apps for all kinds of interests”. In fact, Facebook’s philosophy when it comes to apps, seems to be similar to that of Apple. “Whether you love snowboarding, gardening, hiking, or knitting, or something else, there will be an app for you,” it says.

The California-based giant claims the latest changes mean “you can now enhance your timeline with apps that help you tell your story.”

Facebook has sought to leverage Timeline with a variety of partnerships since it launched in late 2011. The first such partnership was with music streaming service Spotify. The social network also recently added Timeline to its mobile offerings for touch devices using the mobile web, as well as on the latest versions of Facebook for Android and iOS.
