Barcode scanning, the ever budding technology is now being rolled out by PriceCheck.co.za to make comparison shopping that much easier. Books, dvds, and over seven million products support barcode scanning.

Like the site itself, the PriceCheck app (which can be downloaded from the iTunes store) is exceptionally simple to use. The download is less than a meg, and works in seconds flat. Practically no interaction is required by the user, outside of holding the camera in front of a barcode. The Pricecheck barcode app then automatically translates the barcode into a serial number to search for the item’s details online.

From this point, the PriceCheck experience takes over. Built into the barcode scanning app are all the mobile PriceCheck functions and users can search the online database, checking the scanned product for a cheaper option, if one exists.

It’s a user-friendly, practically idiot-proof application, which is not fully functional yet, but works wonders on books and magazines. As PriceCheck puts it, “the barcode scanning app is a helpful companion for making your shopping even more rewarding.”

We tested the application on a number of products, ranging from digital products, to food items and books. And just as PriceCheck warned us, the only real results we got were from scanning books. But the database grows daily and in a few months, is expected to house product information for the millions of other items located on the PriceCheck database.

PriceCheck.co.za began in 2006, to afford users the opportunity to compare products from various stores, picking the lowest price. PriceCheck GM, Andre de Wet calls it: “the only address to start your eCommerce spend”.
