Anonymous-OS goes live, download if you dare

Hey, remember when Anonymous created its own um… anonymous social network? Well the lovable hacktivist scamps behind it seem to have made another go at building something. This time it’s an OS.

The Linux-based operating system is called, rather imaginatively, Anonymous-OS. According to Source Forge, the OS was created “for educational purposes, to checking the security of web pages”.

A Tumblr blog dedicated to the OS claims it has been downloaded 4 600 times since going live.

The User Interface (UI) actually doesn’t look too bad if headless suits, Guy Fawkes masks and lots of black are your thing. Then again, if you’re the type of person likely to install this OS, they probably are.

Anonymous-OS was reportedly created under Ubuntu 11.10 and uses Mate Desktop. It also features DuckDuckGo as its default search engine. If this really has been created through the collaborative efforts of Anonymous, does that count as a ringing endorsement for the alternative search engine?

The OS supposedly comes standard with a number of apps including:

  • ParolaPass Password Generator
  • Find Host IP
  • Anonymous HOIC
  • Ddosim
  • Pyloris
  • Slowloris
  • TorsHammer
  • Sqlmap
  • Havij
  • Sql Poison
  • Admin Finder
  • John the Ripper
  • Hash Identifier
  • Tor
  • XChat IRC
  • Pidgin
  • Vidalia
  • Polipo
  • JonDo
  • i2p
  • Wireshark
  • Zenmap

Even for Anonymous, the English used on the blog is fairly sketchy. Take the anti-hacking warning in the Tumblr site’s about section:

If you attack to any web page, might end up in jail because is a crime in most countries!
*** The user has total responsibility for any illegal act. ***

Language issues aside, I’m not sure how well that message resonates with the tone set by Anonymous following the recent arrest of a number fellow hacktivist group LulzSec’s members.

The Hacker News also warns that the OS “is not developed by any Genuine Source, can be backdoored OS by any Law enforcement Company or Hacker. Use at your own Risk”.

Feel free to download Anonymous-OS and try it out for yourself. I think I’ll give it a miss.

Update: Anonymous has denounced the OS as a fake. Read more about it in in our follow up article.
