Twitter acquires Posterous

Popular blogging platform Posterous has been acquired by Twitter. Posterous announced on Monday that it has been acquired, but that Posterous Spaces will remain up and running without disruption and that users will receive ample notice should there be any changes to its service offering.

Alluding to possible upcoming changes, Posterous said in its blog post that it would share instructions on how users can back up their content and export data to alternative services like WordPress, Tumblr and Blogger in the coming weeks.

The company posted an FAQ for more information on what can be expected as well as information on changes related to custom domain hosting.

Twitter posted the following message on its blog:

Today we are welcoming a very talented group from Posterous to Twitter. This team has built an innovative product that makes sharing across the web and mobile devices simple—a goal we share. Posterous engineers, product managers and others will join our teams working on several key initiatives that will make Twitter even better

It’s unclear how Posterous will be integrated into Twitter, so it’s possible that it’s purely a talent acquisition. In the past Twitter has acquired TweetDeck, BagCheck — a list sharing/discovery service — AdGrok — a keyword bidding platform — and BackType — a social analytics company.

Posterous grew steadily over the years, but Tumblr quickly became the more popular platform.
