MXit has announced the launch of a new set of developer APIs as well as a redesigned Developer Centre.
The company claims that by using open web standards, it is opening MXit up for anyone who wants to develop apps for it.

The new APIs will reportedly allow developers access to MXit authentication and messaging, and will also allow them to publish apps on MXit, through its Mobi Portal API.
Developers will also able to tie into the MXit payment system, called forin-app microtransactions. The social network claims that the payment system has over ten-million global users.
Andy Volk, vice president of developer relations at MXit reckons that JudgeMe, an app that helps people meet each other by uploading and browsing photos is a great example of how successful the new APIs could be.
JudgeMe went past the 400 000 user mark less than a month after launching and, according to its developer Motribe, is “already generating enough revenue to cover its costs”.
“We are very excited about the future of Mxit, not only from a social platform point of view, but also because this opportunity offers local developers an opportunity to develop ways to generate income,” says Volk.
The company says the new Mxit Developer APIs are just the first it plans to launch and are available now on its Developer Centre.
