Police in the UK are investigating allegedly racist comments made against Chelsea footballer Ashley Cole on Twitter.

According Sky Sports, a Twitter user referred to the sports star as “choc ice” on the social network.

Manchester United player Rio Ferdinand then responded, saying “I hear you fella! Choc ice is classic hahahahahaha!!”.

A UK police spokesperson said: “We have received complaints from members of the public regarding alleged racist comments made on a social networking site.

“These concerns will be fully investigated to establish whether any criminal offences have been committed.”

Cole has released a statement saying that he will not be seeking any form of action against Ferdinand.

The Manchester United defender meanwhile has defended his actions, saying that the term “choc ice” isn’t racially abusive, but refers to someone who is a “fake”.

Earlier this year, a UK student was arrested after sending out a series of abusive tweets aimed at Bolton striker Fabrice Muamba.

The young striker had just suffered a massive heart failure when Liam Stacey sent out a tweet saying “LOL, Fuck Muamba. He’s dead.”
