Vodacom CEO and über geek Pieter Uys will step down as head of the African mobile giant in 2013.
Uys will be replaced by current Vodafone Spain chief Shameel Joosub, who was previously the managing director of Vodacom’s South African division.

“On behalf of the board, I would like to thank Pieter for his many achievements in establishing a great business…. We are grateful for his vision, leadership and commitment over the past two decades,” said Vodacom board chairman Peter Moyo.
According to Vodacom, Joosub’s appointment will become effective as of 1 September in order to ensure a smooth transition.
Uys has been with the mobile giant since 1993, having spent the last four years as CEO.
“I have had a fantastic two decades with Vodacom and will cherish many happy memories,” said Uys, “I’m hugely proud of our people. Together, we have created a powerful and trusted brand at the centre of our customers’ daily lives.
“It’s now time for change, and I will leave Vodacom confident that the business will prosper under Shameel’s leadership.”
Vodacom is part of Vodafone, one of the world’s largest mobile communications companies by revenue, with more than 398-million customers. Vodacom claims to be the third largest operation in the Vodafone group of companies based on profitability.
The group has reportedly been discussing Uys’ departure for almost a year as part of its succession plan. Uys has not revealed what he plans to do after leaving Vodacom.
