Back in September Kindle released FreeTime, a service that keeps your kids in a safe zone for content like movies and games. Now the tech giant has introduced the Kindle FreeTime Unlimited service, which gives your kid so much more to do. Essentially a subscription for kids, it will also allow parents to filter what content their children can access, even to the point of how long.

Available on all except the original Kindle, there will be plenty of material available for children. Disney, Nickelodeon and Marvel are all part of the fray, with well-known titles such as Thomas The Tank Engine available too. Content for children are done by age and gender, which will open up a library of books, movies, and apps appropriate for their age group. Content can be placed in categories for selection and can also be re-filtered for new ideas or content using an inbuilt “recommendation” feature.
Content for kids, especially those under the age of 10, has not been well represented by most manufacturers up until now, with Nintendo being the only one that explored that area. Amazon seems to have realised that the trend for kids being introduced at a younger age to mobile devices and computers is growing.
Unfortunately there is still no way to “blacklist” content (Barney the Dinosaur for instance). Kindle VP Peter Larsen says that is however something that could be on its way soon.
