We’re not sure exactly what this is for (besides occasional bouts of procrastination), but it’s cool. What do you get when you combine HTML5, your webcam, a 3D mesh and your face? A demo called Web Cam Mesh.

Created by freelance web developer Felix Turner, Web Cam Mesh is an interactive 3D projection of whatever your webcam can see, in almost real time. You can navigate the scene using your mouse, and ‘turn’ it around to see what it all looks like from different angles. A drop-down control panel lets you adjust aspects of the projection like the transparency of the mesh, z-level, colour saturation, contrast and the amount of noise.
The demo makes use of a technology called WebGL, which allows you to see 3D graphics in your browser without downloading additional software. It’s the same tech that has been used recently in Chrome experiments like the one Google and production company Unit 9 put together ahead of the new Wizard of Oz movie and which featured in Google Australia’s Lego Build. It’s quite a graphics-intensive experience though, so if you’ve got an older machine or sluggish internet connection, prepare for some minor hiccups. It also only currently works with Opera or Chrome, so you may have to switch browsers too.
