7 of the most ill-advised celebrity tweets of all time

50 Cent

Sometimes all it takes is a few wrong words to cause an unrivalled uproar — a fact which celebrities are very well acquainted with. Social media sites are a magnet for collecting those wrong words. Here are seven impressive examples showing how a little tweet can make a big noise.

50 Cent wants to make a positive impact

He tweeted:

“Speaking of MILF. I wanna do something that impacts kids in a positive way, that’s why I’m opening an abortion clinic. Ima call it 50/50 chance.”

The backward and nonsensical nature of this comment is obvious, stirring the reaction on Mtv.com, “SMH.” Indeed, people all over can only shake their heads at this one.

What did he really mean? There is no way to pinpoint his intentions here. Did he want to insult someone? Did he want to elicit laughs? Or did he just want to make the public frown and say “huh?” If the latter was the case, he accomplished his purpose.

This is not the only instance of 50 Cent making waves with his tweets, which brings us to the next item on the list.

50 Cent insults the autistic

When he decided to make fun of someone, his Twitter account resounded with the words:

“I just saw your picture fool, you look autistic.” It did not stop there, however. He further tweeted, “I don’t want no special ed kids on my time line go follow somebody else.”

Oops! The rapper did not escape the consequences of his remarks. Holly Robinson Peete, whose teenage son is autistic, called him out in an open letter at hollyrod.org, where she said, “We are no joke. Neither is autism. We are not about to let you attempt to make “autistic” the new “R-word” under our watch.”

Faced with the scathing reaction of the community of autism advocates, 50 Cent did try to smooth over the situation, tweeting, “just kidding about da special ed kids man, i was in special ed day said i had anger issues lol.” It is doubtful that many were laughing out loud after this incident.

Stephanie Rice gets overenthusiastic about sports

Everyone understands the enthusiasm that comes along with sports. The jumping, the yelling, the screaming, and the high-fiving all belong to the experience of supporting teams we care about. The fever went too far for swimmer Stephanie Rice, however. After a rugby game in 2010, she tweeted:

“Suck on that f******. Probs the best game I’ve ever seen!! Well done boys.”

One of her gay friends, who is one of her fellow Olympians, gave her his support. That, along with Stephanie Rice’s apologetic attitude and the free admission that she made a mistake, together formed her damage control strategy. Despite her efforts, however, this slur that slipped onto Twitter had a heavy price for her. What price? Only a sponsorship deal with Jaguar.

John Cusack calls for ‘Satanic Death Cult’

Yes, John Cusack included that chilling phrase in a tweet he made in 2010. The tweet read in full:

“I AM FOR A SATANIC DEATH CULT CENTER AT FOX NEWS HQ AND OUTSIDE THE OFFICES ORDICK ARMEYAND NEWT GINGRICH-and all the GOP WELFARE FREAKS.”

Quoted on foxnews.com, Dr. Carole Lieberman, a psychiatrist, said, “His provocative tweets could easily incite a rabid fan to commit violent acts against Fox News Headquarters and others he names.” Cusack’s words also put him in danger of losing some of his fan base, who, despite their love of his acting, had motivation aplenty to walk away from him because of his lack of tact when expressing his political views.

Gilbert Gottfried drowns himself

In 2011, comedian Gilbert Gottfried posted a string of jokes on Twitter poking at the victims of Japan’s major earthquake and tsunami. While the world was reeling from the events and doing all they could to provided needed help, Gottfried threw some humor into the mix—and suffered as a result. Among the jokes tweeted were, “Japan is very advanced. They don’t go to the beach. The beach comes to them,” and, “I just split up with my girlfriend, but like the Japanese say, ‘They’ll be another one floating by any minute now.”

What were the consequences for the comedian’s ill-mannered and ill-timed tweets? He had worked for insurance company Aflac as the voice of its duck. After the tweets, however, he lost that job because of his distasteful jokes.

Kim Kardashian blows the cover of an air marshal

When she found out that next to her on an airplane sat an air marshal, Kim Kardashian could not contain her excitement. She tweeted, “I’m on the airplane…love wifi! I am sitting next to an Air Marshall! Jim the air marshall makes me feel safe!” There are sound reasons for air marshals not to flaunt their position, which is why Kardashian’s tweet annoyed more than a few people.

Kardashian, of course, felt the need to defend herself. In a further tweet, she said, “RELAX I just told u guys the Air Marshall is sitting next to me. highly doubt anyone is twittering like me on this flight! Shhh.” While it is true that no terrorists leapt on this one, it illustrates the value of thinking before tweeting.

50 Cent lets his arrogance shine

Yes, we are coming full circle with this last one on our list of history’s most inadvisable tweets. 50 Cent can rightly be termed the king of bad tweets. While this one was not as appalling as insulting those with autism or spewing out indecipherable comments about abortion, it still stirred up a fire. He tweeted, “I can’t believe my Grandmothers making me take out the garbage I’m rich f*** this I’m going home I don’t need this s***”

This tweet did not cost 50 Cent his job or his fans, and he did not destroy the anonymity of an air marshal. Nonetheless, grandmothers across the world surely suffered some ruffled feathers when this one hit cyberspace. We must take 50 Cent for what he is. What exactly is that? Well… he is 50 Cent. That’s it.

Twitter is an excellent resource for staying updated on the happenings of celebrities and music news. There is never a dull moment in the entertainment industry and it can always be fun seeing the mighty fall. These were some of the most inadvisable celebrity tweets of all time, but what are some memorable tweets you have seen from superstars?
