YouTube embraces superheroes and sci-fi with its first ever Geek Week

YouTube Geek Week

Quick test: Which regeneration of the Doctor did Matt Smith play? Which planet is Thor from? What do you call dressing up in costume and acting as a specific character? No clue? Then you may not be the target market for YouTube’s next project.

The video site is aiming to showcase some geek culture by pronouncing 4-10 August its first ever ‘Geek Week’ and promoting some of the genre’s top channels which cover everything from sci-fi to comics, gaming and superheroes. To do this, its own channel will be featuring videos from users like Nerdist, the official Doctor Who channel, MinutePhysics and more than a hundred others, with every day of the week hosted by a different user. It’ll even include the first trailer for the new Thor movie, The Dark World.

The full schedule looks like this:

Blockbuster Sunday: A celebration of the iconic characters, movies and shows that define geek culture — plus a spotlight on the best original YouTube sci-fi, fantasy and animation.

Global Geekery Monday: Anime from Tokyo, comic book heroes from Delhi, and a celebration of “Doctor Who.” Explore geek culture from around the world.

Brainiac Tuesday: Science, education and knowledge channels that make YouTube the world’s biggest platform for learning.

Super Wednesday: From hilarious parodies to real-life superpowers, explore superheroes, the supernatural and the super-weird. Plus, released exclusively for Geek Week, the trailer for Marvel’s Thor: The Dark World.

Gaming Thursday: A gamers’ paradise, with live play-throughs, video games in real life, game-inspired original series and much more.

Fan Friday: Sci-fi-themed cooking, incredible cosplay and impassioned nerd debates as YouTube’s biggest fans take centre stage.

The team has already put together a playlist to get the ball rolling, featuring quirky geek trivia tests and even a tutorial on how to get the perfect Hatsune Miku look. According to YouTube, they’ll also be sneaking in some geeky Easter eggs (hidden, entertaining things developers build into a website or program) for the fans to find, and the ability for serious hunters to collect badges for each one they find.
