Find out where that damn noise is from with YouTube’s new Play icon

This is insanely useful if you have a bit of a YouTube addiction. The video-sharing service has added a new play icon that lets you know which tab a video is playing on.

The feature, first spotted by Google System, disappears when you pause a video and ,although it’s a very minor tweak, should be incredibly useful to YouTube users.

Because YouTube auto-plays videos as soon as you open them, it can be a real pain trying to figure out which one playing when you have the site open in multiple tabs. The feature is also browser agnostic, meaning that it should work as well on Firefox and Internet Explorer as it does on Chrome.

Here’s an example of what the new feature looks like in action:

As The Next Web notes, the feature is similar to one that was tested out on the HTML5 trial version of YouTube that Google offers back in February.

It’s slightly different yes, but it’s an indication that YouTube and Google are working on the same problem in parallel. Ordinarily that might not be the best of moves, but the YouTube-built feature is good for now. Google’s HTML 5 feature meanwhile could be extended beyond just YouTube videos. After all, who among us hasn’t had to cycle through 28 tabs at some point in our lives, cursing whichever site that awful noise is coming from?
