Google looking to add Swahili, Igbo, Zulu to Translate roster

Confusion

Google is looking to add a number of African languages, including Hausa, Igbo, Zulu and Swahili to Google Translate.

A post on Google Africa’s Google+ page shows that it’s looking for volunteers to help out with the translation.

That’s an indication that they could soon join the 71 other languages currently supported by Google Translate.

Anyone volunteering to get involved in the translation is directed to another page where they’re asked to rate an existing translation from English to the language concerned on a scale ranging from “poor” to “excellent”.

The feature seems a little buggy at the moment but shows some serious promise. If Google wants a few more translators in some of these areas it might need to accelerate its whitespace and loon projects.
