Burning Hot: the new iPhones, Kimmel’s twerking prank and Piccing

Burning Hot Michelle

This week’s episode of Burning Hot is all about Apple’s latest iDevices, the social network startup that looks like a mashup of Evernote and Pinterest and um, how that epic twerking fail video that had the web in awe was actually a prank.

Yep, that clip which shows a woman setting herself on fire after falling while twerking isn’t real — but it still managed to get over nine million views before the secret was revealed. It was actually put together by US talk show host Jimmy Kimmel and features a stunt woman, not an eager dancer trying to pull off Miley Cyrus moves. Because sometimes, not everything you see on the internet is true.

The major tech news this week was the launch of the iPhone 5C and 5S, Apple’s two new phones with very different functionality. While the 5S is the new flagship, the 5C replaces the iPhone 5 and offers iFans an improved front-facing camera as well as a candy-coloured polycarbonate shell in five different flavours. Its big brother is still all shiny aluminium, but now comes in white, “space grey” and “champagne” (read: gold), and sports new features ranging from a fingerprint scanner to a 64-bit chip and an improved camera sensor with bigger pixels (not more megapixels).

Over on Ventureburn, we documented social inspiration sharing site Piccing and its move into South Africa. Piccing is setting its sights on dominating the social ecommerce market with a service which aims to help its users find inspiration and meet like-minded individuals who share their tastes. With more than 1.2-million monthly users, it’s definitely a startup to watch.
