Ellen DeGeneres’ celeb selfie is now the most retweeted tweet ever

It’s official. All you have to do to grab the title of most retweeted tweet of all time is to gather a handful of celebrities together, whip out your phone and snap a selfie.

That’s exactly what happened when actress and talk show host Ellen DeGeneres posted a shot of herself along with stars from Kevin Spacey to Jennifer Lawrence, Brad Pitt and Meryl Streep. The tweet has gone on to amass more than 2.3-million retweets so far, with Twitter announcing that it is now the most retweeted tweet in Twitter’s history.

That means that DeGeneres and company have taken the title from Barack Obama, who has held the spot since 2012 with this tweet about his re-election.

According to the Twitter team, DeGenere’s tweet also saw the highest spike in conversation on Oscars night, followed by an increase in tweets per minute when pizzas were delivered to the audience and when sci-fi flick Gravity won its sixth Oscar for film editing. Globally, there were more than 14.7-million tweets during the live show, with certain stars featuring in more tweets than others.

Overall, the most tweeted about nominees were:

  1. Jennifer Lawrence
  2. Brad Pitt
  3. Alfonso Cuaron
  4. Cate Blanchett
  5. Sandra Bullock

The most mentioned movies on the night were:

  1. Gravity
  2. Frozen
  3. 12 Years a Slave
  4. Dallas Buyers Club
  5. The Wolf of Wall Street

Of course, DeGeneres wasn’t the only celeb posting selfies — Kevin Spacey tried to beat her tweet with a shot of himself with Jimmy Kimmel. While that didn’t work, it must be said that his photobombing skills are definitely improving.
