Former Apple CEO John Sculley to take on Indian smartphone market

John Sculley

He may be best known as the man who effectively forced Steve Jobs out of Apple, but John Sculley reckons he still has a role to play in the tech space. More specifically, he wants to go after the Indian smartphone market.

According to BGR, the former Apple CEO is getting ready to launch a new smartphone brand in India alongside former Micromax smartphone head Ajay Sharma.

The venture, which is reportedly being bankrolled by Singapore-based Inflexionpoint (a company that counts Sculley among its founding partners), reportedly already has a team on the ground consisting mainly of Sharma’s former Micromax and HTC India colleagues.

The group will apparently go after the lower to middle end of the country’s smartphone market. Given that those segments are already fairly crowded, it’s unclear how exactly it plans to differentiate itself.

According to BGR, Sharma is however confident that the company can position itself and its product to sell smartphones in large numbers.

There is no doubt that the Indian smartphone market is burgeoning, but any new player in the space is always going to have an uphill battle.
