Procrastination warning: today’s Google doodle is a functioning Rubick’s Cube

Google Rubick's cube

Oh no. There goes your productive Monday. The team over at Google has put together an interactive doodle for the 40th anniversary of the Rubick’s Cube… and it’s awesome.

Google went with straight and simple for its tribute to the world’s best-selling toy — if you head over to Google.com, you’ll see the puzzle hasn’t been integrated into the company’s logo at all. They’ve ditched that entirely in favour of a simple cube above the search bar, although it helps that Google’s logo is also the same mix of colours as the toy.

If you click the square (which twists occasionally as if to suggest you should play with it), it will expand, allowing you to move the rows of blocks vertically and horizontally until you’ve completed the puzzle. You can also share the completed product (or, if you’re not as proficient, your progress) on Google+, Facebook and Twitter.

Google will track the number of moves you’ve taken in the bottom left corner, so you can try to better your score as you go along.

You can direct your thanks for the distraction to Ernő Rubik, the Hungarian sculptor and professor of architecture who created the 3D puzzle back in 1974.
