If you’ve been a little underwhelmed by the Hobbit trilogy, we’re sorry but there’s not much we can do to fix that. You may however be able to find a little solace in the latest update to Google’s “A Journey Through Middle-earth” Chrome experiment.

The experiment allows you to wander through Middle Earth and relive a bunch of epic Tolkien adventures, from Frodo’s journey to Mount Doom in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring to Bilbo’s final battle in The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, which is set to hit theaters on 17 December.

According to Google, the experiment’s map allows you to explore 27 locations from the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies. Also included are 3D animations highlighting the paths of eight key characters, including Bilbo, Gandalf and Bard.

Perhaps the biggest update however comes in the shape of a peer-to-peer battle game where you can challenge your friends to a test of skill. Google says the game was built primarily using the latest web technologies, including WebRTC and WebGL and is touch optimised for laptops, phones and tablets

This year’s Chrome Experiment was developed by North Kingdom in collaboration with Warner Bros. Pictures, New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures (MGM).
