Kim Kardashian, Facebook and iPhone 6 top Bing’s 2014 search lists

New Bing

The year is winding down and with that comes the mandatory look-backs from companies across the tech world. The latest to do so is Microsoft, which has released its list of the top searches on Bing. The Apple iPhone 6, Facebook and Kim Kardashian — the woman who set out to break the internet with her bum — top the list.

Kim Kardashian butted her way to the top five of most searched people, bumping Beyonce from number one to number two. Singers Miley Cyrus and Katy Perry came in third and fourth and Justin Bieber filled the number five spot.

Microsoft tracks billions of searches throughout the year and lists the top searches across a variety of categories, including most-searched news stories, devices, apps, sports and celebrities.

“We’re taking a look back at the people, moments, and events that shaped 2014,” the Bing Team writes in its official blog post. “Trends in Bing searches give us a unique view into what mattered most to us throughout the year.”

In the app category, according to Bing, Facebook’s mobile app was searched for more than any other. Following behind it in the top five app searches were Twitter, Instagram, Skype and Vine.

The Apple iPhone 6, which launched in September after months of rumours about its design and features, topped the search list for devices. The Xbox One, Fitbit, Apple’s iPad and the Surface Pro 3 were the other devices that followed the iPhone 6.

In top news stories that had the most impact, the World Cup was at the top followed by the Super Bowl, the missing Malaysia Airlines jet, the Winter Olympics and the rise of the terror group ISIS.

In news that moved people the most, Ice Bucket challenge is number one, Bring back Our girls is at number two, and completing the top five are US freestyle skier Gus Kenworthy and the stray puppies he found in Sochi; the 100 000 birthday cards received by six-year-old cancer patient Danny Nickerson; and James Costello, the Boston Marathon bombing victim who married his nurse.
