If you own one of the 1.2-million devices with an active version of the FNB banking app installed, you may be pleased to learn that you can now withdraw money from an ATM without using your bank card.

Cardless ATM withdrawals have been available to FNB cellphone banking customers for some time now — according to the South African banking giant, more than R2-billion has been withdrawn through cardless cash withdrawals — but bringing the feature the app should make it significantly easier for smart device users.
To use cardless cash withdrawals on the app, you have to:
- Launch the app
- Select cardless cash withdrawals
- Enter your FNB online banking password
- Follow the prompted steps
- Once the temporary ATM PIN has been received the money can be withdrawn from any FNB ATM
Giuseppe Virgillito, Head of Banking App at FNB Digital Banking, says the rollout to the App was the logical step in the wake of the success of cellphone banking withdrawals.
“Enhancement of the FNB Banking App has always been driven by innovative banking solutions and customer demand. Our latest results show a 67% increase in App transaction volumes. This comes as a result of increased usage across the spectrum of App features as well as more customers that are migrating to the App for their digital banking needs.”
“Irrespective of the reason for not having a card with you, your mobile devices are unlikely to be more than an arm’s length away. Cardless and cashless features on digital channels ensure simplified banking and 24/7 access to accounts, no matter what the circumstances,” Virgillito added.
Since launching in 2011, FNB’s banking app has been one of its most successful products. Its various updates and features have not, however, all been embraced. In 2012, for instance, it launched Geo-payments. While the feature is still available on the app, it wouldn’t exactly be controversial to suggest that it hasn’t been the success FNB hoped it would.
