Throughout the course of the past week, professional and volunteer firefighters have been battling a massive blaze across Cape Town’s Southern peninsula. At one stage, driven by strong winds and high temperatures, the fire covered an area of more than 5 000ha. It took down everything in its wake.

Along with social media, the scale and duration of the fire provided people with unparalleled insight into the work put in by those firefighters.

As a result of that, South Africans have banded together, sending resources and financial assistance to various firefighting organistations and ensuring that they can continue doing their work wherever fires break out.
