Microsoft acquires Wunderlist for around $200m

Microsoft has acquired Wunderlist, a to-do list app based in Berlin. Under Satya Nadella, Microsoft has not only made more inroads towards being more mobile friendly but also has begun making acquisitions that makes the company a major player in mobile apps.

The other thing the company has done well is to make its apps work across platforms and devices and not confine them to mobile devices that run Windows. This has led many to refer to Microsoft as the company that is beginning to be cool.

There has been rumours of this for sometime but no statements from both companies. Neither company has revealed the figures but the amount is guessed at around the $100- $200 million mark.

Wunderlist was started in 2011 by a Berlin-based startup, 6Wunderkinder. It works across all major mobile and desktop platforms. Users can create lists, organize, and share lists with others. Wunderlist claims that it has 13 million+ customers who have created more than one billion to-do lists.

Microsoft said that customers can expect the Wunderlist app to remain free and there will be no price changes for Wunderlist Pro or Wunderlist for Business customers.

There appears to be no plan to change the app, with Microsoft saying it will continue to support a wide range of third-party apps and integrated services. The acquisition has already bourn fruits for Wunderlist. The company has announced that it will introduce a number of new features and partner integrations.

As part of the acquisition, the Wunderlist team will join Microsoft.

“A solution this useful and popular does not happen without a lot of hard work from a group of incredibly smart, creative and talented people. We’re pleased to welcome the Wunderlist team to Microsoft” Microsoft said.

Wunderlist founder and CEO, Christian Reber, relayed his feelings about the acquisition, stating that this is a beginning of great things.

“Our aspirations are much bigger. Joining Microsoft gives us access to a massive wealth of expertise, technology and people that a small company like us could only dream of amassing on its own.”

It is too early to tell what Microsoft’s plan is with Wunderlist and if whether it will rebrand it or keep the way it is. Only time will tell.
